Covers 55.660 km2 in a mountainous area with a variable altitude. The weather is tropical dry at the coast and humid to the interior. The hottest months are from January to April and the coldest is from July to August.
The annual average temperature is 26ºC. There are 12 districts: Sumbe, Porto Amboim, Amboim, Quilenda, Conda, Uko-Seles, Ebo, Cassongue, Kibala, Libolo, Mussende and Waku-Kungo. Sumbe is the capital of the province.
The ethnic groups are the Kibalas, N'goias, Musseles, Mussumbas and Bailundos and the most spoken language is Kimbundu and their main acti-vity is agriculture, cattle breeding and fishing. Beautiful beaches for swimming like the ones from Kicombo, Chicucula, Carimba and Porto Amboim can be found here.
The sea forms many good bays. The fauna is diversified and there are deer, pacaça, capota, among others.
The province was founded in 1769 by Dom Francisco Inocêncio de Sousa Coutinho, the former general governor of Angola and it was named Novo Redondo.
